Sports Bras for Men: How to Measure!

So guys, you're finally ready to try a sports bra! And you're wondering how to measure yourself.

You've probably read my other page dedicated to sports bras for men, but if not take time to glance over it.  I talk a lot in that article about how we need to rethink this gender stereotypical idea that sports bras are only for women. Sports bras should be viewed as an essential piece of athletic equipment that can greatly increase the comfort and health of all humans who need them, men and women.

There. I'll get off my soap box.

This page is going to show you how to measure yourself so you'll feel confident ordering a few sports bras.

First Question: Is the process of measuring for a bra the same for men as it is for women?

The short answer is YES. Men will measure for a bra the same way women measure for a bra. There are literally hundreds of tutorials and images you can find online that show women how to measure for a bra, but none of these feature guys! This changes today!

Because I want this to be a page just for men, I secured a male model who was more than happy to demonstrate the proper bra measuring technique.

What you'll need....

  • cloth tape measure: Measuring yourself will be easier if you have a helper. You can do this by yourself, it will just be a little trickier. Tip: If you're alone maybe look at getting one of these measuring tapes.

To find your bra size, you'll need 2 measurements....

 Now what?

At this point you should have 2 measurements. For example, using the pictures above, his 2 measurements are 40 inches for his bustline and 44 inches for his cupsize.

Time for some calculations....

There are hundreds of bra size calculators online. They all work great. I personally prefer the one on Herroom.com (link to their bra calculator page)

You're going to take your 2 measurement numbers and input them into the bra calculator of your choice. When you hit 'calculate' it should give you your bra size.

When I input my model's numbers it gives him a size of 40D. This is his bra size.

Next up, Bra Shopping!...

Hold your horses there cowboy!

I know you're just chomping at the bit to go bra shopping ;), but first let me give you a few pointers.

  • Your bra size is a suggestion, not a commandment! Your bra size calculation may be slightly off for whatever reason. Maybe due to your body type a 38DD will fit you better than a 40D. Don't be afraid to try a size up or a size down if you find your sports bra doesn't fit well. Also, bra sizes will vary among brands so keep that in mind. (pain-in-the-butt I know!) The bra size that you calculated today is a great starting point, but be a little flexible. It's not set in stone.
  • It's a good idea to redo your bra measurements every year. For women, our breast size can change for a whole host of reasons; pregnancy, weight gain/loss, hormonal issues, even the day of the month. Men can also experience a change in breast size, mostly due to weight gain/loss, but also age which brings an increase in estrogen as your testosterone levels drop off.

Now you're ready!

With your bra size firmly implanted in your brain (or written on a piece of paper so you don't forget) you're ready to go Sports Bra shopping!

Deep Breaths. You should prepare yourself, it can be every bit as intimating/awful as you think it's going to be. (kidding..... not kidding (sigh))

But don't lose hope! In my next article I'm going to take you through a step by step process as I choose 3-4 sports bras for my male model to order and try out. I'll tell you what I look for in a good men's sports bra . Then we'll order 'em, he'll try 'em on, and we'll do a full review on each one. These reviews and articles will be posted over the course of the next month, so don't be a stranger! Visit back often or subscribe to my RSS feed for updates.
